Levels 2 and 3

Some settings list information about levels, specically Levels 2 and 3.

Levels refer to data standards for credit card transactions. They provide increasingly detailed standards. Higher data standards qualify for lower interchange rates from Visa and Mastercard. That means, merchants save on processing fees. Advanced level are oftn required by many government and large enterprise buyers. This also accommodates buyers needing detailed transaction data for accounting and reconciliation.

Level 1
Level 1 is the most basic data standards for credit card transactions. In general industry terms, Level 1 is simply a standard transaction with basic data. This includes the amount, date, merchant name, card number. It's the default when no enhanced data is provided.

Level 2
This is an enhanced data standard. It is typically the standard for business to business transactions, such as corporate, and purchasing cards.

Level 2 adds:

  • Customer code and purchase order number
  • The tax amount
  • A tax indicator. This is a flag indicting if tax is included in the transaction amount, and if so, what kind.

Level 3
This is the most advanced data standard. It offers the most detail and accountability. It is typically the standard for large business to business transactions, government transactions, and government purchase cards. Level 3 can reduce interchange fees by 0.5% to 1.5% compared to Level 1. This discount become significant at high transaction volumes.

Level 3 adds:

  • Line-item details, such as product codes, descriptions, quantities, unit prices
  • Ship-to and ship-from postal codes
  • Freight amount
  • Discount amount
